Two of the five seats on the Leon County Schools school board were up for primary election on August 30, 2016. Two newcomers filed for the District 2 seat: Rosanne Wood and Roger Pinholster. Wood won the seat outright when she received more than 50 percent of the votes cast. In District 4, incumbent Dee Dee Rasmussen also won re-election outright. She defeated challengers Tallie Gainer III and Patrick Cannon.[1][2]
Florida school board elections function differently than elections of this kind in most states. Primary elections for Florida school boards were held on August 30, 2016, though primaries are functionally general elections. A general election was held on November 8, 2016, between the top two vote recipients in any race where no candidate receives the majority of votes. Unopposed elections were canceled and did not appear on the ballot. Special elections were held in conjunction with some general elections to fill vacancies.
