Six seats on the School Committee for Lawrence Public Schools were up for a primary election on September 17, 2013 and a general election on November 5, 2013. Jeovanny Rodriguez defeated Angel Garcia for the District D seat, while incumbent Patricia Mariano won the District E seat by defeating Homayoun Maali. Incumbents Milquicided Santos, Pavel M. Payano and James R. Blatchford ran unopposed and won the District B, C and F seats. No candidates filed before the deadline for the District A seat, but Myra Ortiz ran a successful write-in campaign to win the seat.

Lawrence Public Schools is located in Essex County, Mass.

Lawrence Public Schools is located in northeast Massachusetts in Essex County. The county seats of Essex County are Lawrence and Salem. As of the 2010 Census, Essex County was home to 762,550 residents.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Lawrence Public Schools was the seventh-largest school district in Massachusetts and served 12,900 students.[2]

Demographics

Essex County underperformed compared to the rest of Massachusetts in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 36.6 percent of Essex County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 39.4 percent for Massachusetts as a whole. The median household income in Essex County was $67,311 compared to $66,866 for the state of Massachusetts. The poverty rate in Essex County was 11.2 percent compared to 11.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Method of board member selection

The Lawrence School Committee consists of seven members, six of whom are elected to two-year terms. Each of those six members are elected from and represent a different geographical area in the school district. The seventh member is Lawrence's Mayor, who was William Lantigua. The primary election was held on September 17, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013.

Individuals interested in running for the board began obtaining nominating papers on April 3, 2013. The filing deadline for the 2013 general election was August 6.[4]

Past elections

What was at stake?

District B, C, E and F incumbents Milquicided Santos, Pavel M. Payano, Patricia Mariano and James R. Blatchford filed for re-election. Homayoun Maali, who ran unsuccessfully for the District E seat in 2011, was the only candidate challenging an incumbent, Patricia Mariano. Mariano won. Two candidates, Angel Garcia and Jeovanny Rodriguez, ran for the District D seat that Francisco Surillo vacated. Rodriguez won the open seat. No candidates filed for the District A seat until Myra Ortiz announced her write-in campaign, which was successful.[6][7]

Additional elections on the ballot

This election only shared the ballot with other municipal elections, including the re-election effort of William Lantigua, who served as the Chairperson of the School Committee. Lantigua faced five challengers for his office. No additional measures appeared on the ballot.[6]
