Three seats on the Hall County Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, to select Republican candidates for Posts 2 and 4. Post 2 incumbent Brian G. Sloan and challenger Mark Pettitt edged out Traci McBride, but neither received 50 percent plus one of the vote. Sloan defeated Pettitt in a runoff election on July 22, 2014. Post 4 incumbent William E. Thompson defeated Paul Wayne Godfrey in the Republican at-large primary and was unopposed in the general election. Samuel R. Chapman was unopposed in the Republican Post 1 primary and faced no opposition on November 4, 2014. Chapman, Sloan and Thompson were all re-elected without opposition.

Hall County Schools is located in Hall County, Georgia. The county seat of Hall County is Gainesville, Georgia. Hall County is home to 187,745 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Hall County Schools was the 15th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 26,261 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]
Demographics
Hall County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 22.1 percent of Hall County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Hall County was $52,174 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Hall County was 16.8 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Hall County Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Four members are elected to specific seats while the fifth member is elected at-large. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats are up for election in 2014.[3]
Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]

The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. Residents of Hall County voted in races for state court judge, solicitor general and two seats on the county commission. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. There were also state executive elections including races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The May 20, 2014, election also selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.[7]
