One seat on the Harrison County School District Board of Education was up for general election on November 4, 2014.
Incumbent Bill Bradley defeated challenger Holly Gibbs for the District 5 seat.[1]
About the district
Harrison County School District is located in Harrison County, Mississippi. The county seats are Biloxi and Gulfport. Harrison County had a population of 196,500 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Harrison County School District was the fourth-largest school district in Mississippi and served 13,861 students.[3]
Demographics
In 2012, Harrison County had a higher percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 21.0 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Harrison County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 20.0 percent for Mississippi. The county’s median household income was $43,593, above the state median of $38,882. The poverty rate in Harrison County was 18.2 percent, below the state rate of 22.3 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information
As of the 2014 election, the Harrison County Board of Education consisted of five members elected by specific geographic districts to six-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. One seat was up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on August 6, 2014, and ended on September 5, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 4, 2014.[5][6]

Additional elections on the ballot
This election shared the ballot with general elections for a U.S. House seat and a U.S. Senate seat. It also shared the ballot with county, municipal, and judicial elections. One statewide ballot measure, the Right to Hunt and Fish Amendment, also appeared on the ballot.[7]
