Laffey ran briefly for election to the office of Colorado Governor in 2014. He had planned to seek the Republican nomination in the primary election but promptly dropped out after "like-minded" conservative and former congressman Tom Tancredo entered the race in the interest of preserving Republican Party unity.[4]

Incumbent Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) ran for re-election in 2014.[6] The general election took place November 4, 2014.
