Campaign themes

2014

Hinkson published her platform on her campaign website:

Foster an environment of trust, respect, and teamwork

Creating an environment of trust, respect, and teamwork starts with excellent two-way communication that informs and seeks out input from educators, staff, students, and parents alike. Teamwork begins by listening to all parties and using this valued input to help guide the decisions made by school board members and district administrators.

As a retired teacher with 21 years experience in the Temecula School District, I am in the unique position of having first hand knowledge and insight into the issues that are important to teachers and staff at the school sites. I have built relationships with all parties including teachers, staff, students, parents, and district administrators. These relationships coupled with continued communication with all parties will foster the building of a strong bridge for working together.

Support increasing funding and programs in art, music, and PE for elementary students

With previous state budget issues, music, art, and PE specialists were eliminated from elementary schools. As the budget has improved, funding for these programs should be a priority. The district has begun restoring Visual and Performing Arts, but in a large group format with class sizes up to 200 students at a time. Research has shown that education in music and the arts improves academic performance and enjoyment. The same is true of Physical Education. Students who participate in physical activity return to class better able to concentrate and perform better academically. Childhood obesity is becoming more prevalent making the role of educating students about physical exercise critical. Increasing funding in these areas helps students enjoy school, relieve stress, develop healthy lifestyles, an appreciation for culture and the arts, and encourages well-rounded individuals.

Focus on providing excellence in education and preparing students for the real world by providing rich and varied educational opportunities

The paths students will take in life and careers are as unique and varied as the students themselves. While continuing our high academic standards, I support programs that prepare students for their future including both college and career readiness. For example: STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), CTE (career and technical education) and skilled trades, use of 21st century technology, internships, certificate programs, arts, and an overall vision toward the future.

My campaign slogan, “Every Student, Every School”, means meeting the needs of every student by providing rich and varied educational opportunities.[4]
