Public participation in board meetings

The Midwest City-Del City Schools school board maintains the following policy on public testimony during board meetings:[4]

The Board of Education encourages members of the public to bring forward any suggestions for the improvement of the school system. Board members and the superintendent cannot, by law, respond to questions or comments from members of the public during a Board meeting. The Board will not vote on matters brought forward by the public if those matters do not relate to specific agenda items. Persons who address the Board during public participation must state their name and address and follow these guidelines:

1. Not use the public participation portion of the Board meeting to make slanderous, abusive, and personal statements against any individual. The Board President may rule any speaker out of order who makes such statements.
2. Not speak regarding litigation pending against the District or employees of the District.
3. Not speak regarding a matter that is currently the subject on an investigation being conducted by the District or its agents or attorneys, or which is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. [5]

Academic performance

Each year, state and local education agencies use tests and other standards to assess student proficiency. Although the data below was published by the U.S. Department of Education, proficiency measurements are established by the states. As a result, proficiency levels are not comparable between different states and year-over-year proficiency levels within a district may not be comparable because states may change their proficiency measurements.[10]

Noteworthy events

2014: Pre-K expansion

The district announced in April 2014 that it would be expanding its full-day pre-kindergarten program. Prior to the change, only Pleasant Hill Elementary had such a program. The expansion brought the full-day program to six more schools: Country Estates Elementary, Del City Elementary, Epperly Heights Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Steed Elementary, and Townsend Elementary. Class sizes were limited to 20 students per room and enrollment spots were offered on a first-come, first-served basis.[11]

2014: Teacher arrested over sexual messages

Former district teacher Christian Ridner was arrested on October 31, 2014, on a complaint of soliciting sexual communication with a minor by use of technology. He was accused of sending sexual messages via Facebook to a 13-year-old female student. Court documents described the messages and included that Ridner attempted to see the student at Del Crest Middle School by saying he was her mentor. The student informed a school principal that she had been "involved in a relationship for three weeks" with Ridner. Ridner resigned from his position in the district on October 15, 2014.[12]
