For 13 years I have had two kids in this school system with the last a graduating senior this year.

I am a licensed professional engineer with a background in railroad and transit engineering, maintenance, operations and consulting. I have worked for CSX Transportation, the State of Georgia (GRTA) and consulting firms managing large projects. At present I work for Intellectual Concepts. I love my wife, contradancing, swimming and bicycling.

In college, I took the structures option (yes I am a recovering math nerd), went to work on the railroad and found I loved being outside working with the people who kept the railroad running. After a wide variety of experiences, two years ago, I finally designed my first bridge - a 16-foot pedestrian bridge for my son's Eagle Scout project (at Chamblee First United Methodist Church).

A final thought: there are three ways to spend a lot of money. They are: High Living, Gambling, and Running a school system.

The first is the most fun, The second the most exciting, and

The third the most certain!
  • The most urgent effort is to ensure that graduating elementary schoolers are able read and write before advancing to middle and high school, or those schools will become educational deserts.

It is vital that we involve the community, the parents, the businesses in supporting schools and in reading to young students.

A number of other states, most dramatically Mississippi, have made incredible improvements. We have an opportunity to review what works and what doesn’t.

I believe in focused computer labs for elementary, but I do not believe in giving those students their own screens – too much distraction.

Why has recess been cut to 15 minutes? I believe that physical activity is critical to develop the brain and improve learning.
  • I believe in community-based schools where parents are an important part of the school. I believe optimum elementary learning size is around 500. The current 1,000 student size is a great way for those students that fall through the cracks - to fall through the cracks. My experience is that at 500 students – the elementary front desk and everyone at the school knows the pulse of the school and everything that happens! I experienced how tremendous community support is possible at Briarlake Elementary. As co-chair of PTA Buildings and Grounds, I led volunteers in a wide variety of activities! Actions speak louder than words - parents volunteering in schools are a powerful way to show their students that school is important.
  • I believe in the value of mentorship on all levels Teachers, Students and Families. Buildings over people! Really? We need to rebalance DCSC goals. If you see an empty or closed church, is that a church? No, a building is not a church. A church is the people that comprise a church, regardless of where they meet. A school is not a building – it is the community that meets in that building. In contrast, assembly lines/ buildings are known for monotony. Years ago, DCPS selected 1,000-person elementary school metrics. Today - eventually every 500-person elementary will close unless its site can support a supesuper-sized elementary school. But when those successful communities are split, that learning community is destroyed.
I have been impressed through the years to meet many talented and dedicated teachers and at $23,000 per student per year it appears that we have resources. With such opportunities - why do less than 1/3 of elementary students achieve State Standards? Why do we settle for mediocre school system results?

Next year my daughter will major in Math and hoped to teach Math; until all of her favorite and outstanding teachers advised against it. If the talented people who work in the School District can’t recommend the workplace – then we need change. It’s time to focus on what works rather than be seduced by good intentions.
