The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education oversees public K-12 education in Rhode Island. The department managed 305 K-12 schools and 143,793 students during the 2010-2011 school year.[1]

The mission statement of the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education reads:[2]

Board of Education
The Board of Education consists of 11 members appointed by the Governor and approved by the Rhode Island State Senate. The board was created in 2013 by the merger of separate boards dealing with K-12 schools and higher education. Board members are responsible for developing policies related to early childhood education, K-12 curriculum, school safety and charter schools.[4]
