Canyons School District is a school district in Utah that served 33,951 students in 48 schools during the 2012-2013 school year.[1] This district was the fifth-largest by enrollment in the state of Utah.

Demographics

Salt Lake County outperformed in comparison to Utah as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 31.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 30.6 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $61,446, compared to $59,846 for the state. The poverty rate in the county was 11.9 percent, while it was 11.3 percent for the entire state.[2]

The superintendent of Canyons School District is Dr. James Briscoe. He was first appointed to the position in 2014. Briscoe worked as a teacher, dean of students, assistant principal, principal and superintendent for schools in Chicago and Milwaukee for 32 years prior to his appointment.[4]

Members of the board are elected to four-year terms. Board elections are held in November of even-numbered years. Four seats are up for election during federal midterm elections and three seats are up for election during presidential election years.[5]

Public participation in board meetings

The Canyons Board of Education maintains the following policy on public testimony during board meetings:

1. Public comment time is limited to residents and current employees of the District, except with prior approval of Board Leadership.

2. Patrons or current employees wishing to provide public comment are asked to write their names on the provided sign-up sheet within the first 15 minutes of the meeting. Participants must note the agenda item or topic they wish to address, and whether they represent a group.

3. When several people share the same opinion, the Board asks individuals to select a representative spokesperson.

4. Speakers must indicate whether they hold or are seeking an elected or appointed position.

5. Patrons may provide Board members with written documents pertaining to their comments. These documents must be submitted to the Board secretary.

6. Time allotted for individual public comment is at the discretion of the Board President. Generally, individuals receive 3 minutes, and groups receive 6 minutes.

7. Patrons may address the Board on the same issue once in a three-month period. [6]

Budget

From 2010 to 2013, the Canyons School District had an average of $276,369,250 in revenue and $301,027,500 in expenditures, according to the United States Census Bureau's survey of school system finances. The district had a yearly average of $209,766,500 in outstanding debt. The district retired $100,646,250 of its debt and issued $131,751,000 in new debt each year on average.[8]
