Judy Cates
Judy Cates is a judge of the Illinois 5th District Appellate Court. She assumed office in 2012. Her current term ends on December 6, 2032.
Cates ran for re-election for judge of the Illinois 5th District Appellate Court. She won in the retention election on November 8, 2022.
Cates is a judge of the Fifth District Appellate Court in Illinois. She was elected to this position on November 6, 2012 (effective in December) to replace James Donovan for a term that expires on December 4, 2022.[1][2]
Education
Cates received her B.A. degree in government from Cornell University in 1973 and her J.D. degree from the Washington University School of Law in 1977.[3]

Cates has also taught as an adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law and St. Louis University Law School.[3]

2012
Cates was elected to the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court on Nov. 6, 2012. She was unopposed in the March 20, 2012 Democratic primary and defeated Republican judge Stephen P. McGlynn in the general election with 52.1% of the vote.[2][1][4]
