Global competence learning refers to any method used to enhance the ability of an individual to understand the world at large. This understanding can be of a variety of topics, including social issues, economic situations, political climate and cultural influence. An individual with global competence can use his knowledge to adapt to more situations in the educational and professional spheres.[1]
Global competency is widely regarded as a growing necessity of the 21st century. Global economies are becoming more interdependent and wide-scale challenges to human stability are becoming more prominent (war, epidemics, natural disasters). Globacl competence proponents believe that, to remain competitive as a culture, the U.S. must raise citizens who are well-educated on global issues. Global competence learning, then, is the term used to describe approaches aimed towards better global understanding. Many organizations have goals for developing methods of improving competence, but have not yet found definitive solutions. The National Education Association (NEA), the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), the Asia Society, and several other national organizations have pooled their resources in hopes of creating a comprehensive program that will help American schools advance global competency skills.[2][3]
