Campaign themes
2016
Henderson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
Protecting the Community: Communities around the country are frustrated by tenuous relationships with policing agencies and a worsening distrust of the criminal justice system. This issue has deep importance to communities like ours. I, more than anyone, understand these frustrations from personal experience. My plan as State Representative is threefold. First, I will introduce a bill in my first session requiring all officers to wear body cameras. Second, I will work to facilitate a healthy relationship between our community members and the police we trust with protecting our community. Finally, I will use my experience in the criminal justice system to create meaningful policy changes to ensure civil rights are protected for all. Voting Rights: Generations of civil rights leaders have fought valiantly to protect our right to vote, but recently, these rights have come under attack for communities like ours. As State Representative, I will work to create safeguards to ensure that the right to vote is protected for you and your children. Education: Revitalizing our community is the foundation of my platform as candidate for State Representative. In my vision, a vibrant community is one that ensures its youth have all the resources necessary to reach their full potential. This begins with our community’s commitment to excellent educational institutions. Healthcare: Access to affordable preventative healthcare is an issue of heightened importance in our community. Every Texan should be able to see a doctor when in need. The Affordable Care Act is a vehicle that many of our community members could use to have access to affordable healthcare. However, Republicans in Austin have failed to provide the help that many Texans need by refusing to approve President Obama's Medicaid expansion. Send me to Austin, and I will fight for affordable health insurance for all. Decriminalizing Marijuana: Marijuana related arrests impact communities like ours at alarming rates. I believe that we should work to completely legalize marijuana. As State Representative, I will start by working to reduce mandatory sentences for marijuana possession to ensure that casual users will never have to spend a night in jail.[1] |
