I graduated from Archmere Academy in 1984 went on to attend Widener University, technical school, and Eastern University gaining an AS in Electrical Engineering and a BS in Organizational Management. Born in Philladelphia, I have been a Delaware resident for 30 years, and has resided in District 22 for the last 16 years. I spent 15 years with Hewlett-Packard as an engineer and later a senior account manager securing multi million-dollar contracts with some of the country's largest Banks and Telecom organizations. After leaving HP in 2001, I spent a short time in financial services before opening Take The Lead Dance Studio in 2006. I remained a successful business owner in the community for 10 years before selling the business to to address a since resolved health concern. I'm passionate about volunteering and have spent years supporting community and civic organizations. My biggest commitment has been my 14 years with PAWS for People, a regional therapy dog organization, where I performs regular hospital visits with my certified golden retrievers in addition to acting as a trainer, evaluator, and Board member for the organization.
- State Representative in Delaware is paid as a part-time position. I am committing to being a full-time representative for my District. I will not have the distraction or potential conflict of a another full-time job taking focus away from supporting my community and State.
- I am not a politician worried about future political aspirations. I am a Volunteer, Advocate, informed neighbor, leader, business owner, and experienced problem solver making a commitment to represent ALL of my constituents.
- True to the Democratic party that I represent, I that promote personal freedom, economic and educational opportunity, efficient and effective government, and justice for all. I believe that cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls.
My advocacy for public education reform, including a re-engineered funding model that better addresses the extraordinary needs of each student is a top priority . As someone with an auto-immune disease that purchases health care on the marketplace, I understand the challenges of our current system and will fight to guarantee access to affordable healthcare for all within our state. Protecting our environment, maintaining our communities, and preserving our open space is always a priority. As a dedicated volunteer for most of my life, I am an advocate for non-profits that provide critical services to our communities. Becoming an elected official was never on my radar, but I feel it's time to step up and take a leadership role, to address our social and economic issues head on.
Passionate, honest, committed, thoughtful, understanding, collaborative, compassionate, knowledgeable, creative, hard working, and transparent, with great ability to listen and communicate is how I would describe a most effective leader or elected official.
Passionate, honest, committed, thoughtful, understanding, collaborative, compassionate, knowledgeable, creative, hard working, and transparent, with great ability to listen and communicate is how I would describe an effective leader or elected official. I believe that I posses these qualities.
A good State Representative must have a strong connection to their constituents and understand their needs. Addressing local concerns , keeping the community informed, and providing neighbors direction through state and local services is key. You must be present and ensure that their voice is represented. You need to collaborate with fellow legislators to develop positive outcomes and address statewide interests and obligations. Be an integral part of your community and state, represent those that gave you the opportunity to serve, and always place the needs of your citizens above your own personal interests.
My first non-volunteer job was at Burger King. I worked as many hours as possible the summer between high school and college to earn enough money to buy myself a used car to get back and forth to work and college. I was there 3-4 months, hired as summer help. I was always willing to work hard to get what I wanted, that summer it was a 1977 aqua blue mustang.
I was recruited directly out of college at the age of 21 for my first full-time job with Hewlett-Packard (HP) where I stayed for 15 years.
I battled a rare, life threatening auto-immune disease for almost 10 years. Even with very good health insurance, securing needed treatment was often difficult. I faced 8 rounds of infusions in 7 years and my life became a series of doctor visits and tests to fight the disease and many side effects that came along with treatments. Necessary procedures ended any chance of having a child and my marriage ended while I was still fighting the disease. I made the the difficult choice to sell my business to concentrate on my recovery. I am now in remission for more than two years and have learned to never stop fighting, never stop questioning, and never look back. I will take the lessons I learned and move forward as an advocate for change. I gained immense knowledge about health insurance and our health care system and I am committed to protecting every citizen's right to accessible, affordable, and equitable healthcare regardless of economic status or pre-existing condition.
I believe that it is best to have a mix of experience levels. Incorporating members from outside of typical political circles can bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of knowledge and experience from other important areas such as small business.
Absolutely, I believe that it is beneficial to build relationships with other legislators regardless of their party or beliefs. Relationships can build a wealth of knowledge and understanding. When working with any team, building a bridge is always better than building a wall and cooperation is better than conflict.
I would be honored to be assigned to any committees where House leaders thought I could add value. If asked what committees I would most like to be involved in, I would lean towards Education, Health, Technology, Energy, Finance, or Family Law.
If asked to run for another office down the road I would have to examine the need and decide what would be best for me and the citizens that I represent. At this time, I am focused on representing my community as their State Representative and serving the State of Delaware.
