Five of the seven seats on the Rockdale County Board of Education were up for general election on May 24, 2016. There was no primary. A runoff election was held on July 26, 2016, for Post 4. Heather Duncan defeated Cassandra Barker-Carr in the runoff after neither candidate won a majority of the vote against Sherrie Raymore in the general election.[1]
Post 1 incumbent Mandy North and Post 3 incumbent Wales Flynt Barksdale ran for re-election without opposition. Pam Brown defeated Larry Cox and Willie Washington in Post 2. Post 5 incumbent Tony Dowdy defeated challengers Ben Sosby and Yakima Douglas.[1]

My motivation to serve on the School Board is influenced by my desire to provide a high quality public education for all children in Rockdale County Public Schools. I envision our school district to be the kind of district where every decision is made with academic achievement and student growth as a top priority while promoting programs that are educationally sound. In addition, I want to focus on teacher retention by offering incentives for outstanding performances, to provide additional support that will allow teachers to fully focus on classroom instruction, to differentiate instruction in ways that benefit every student in the classroom and to collaborate with teachers and administrators to understand the needs of our schools. Rockdale County Public Schools is located in Rockdale County, Georgia. The county seat of Rockdale County is Conyers. Rockdale County was home to 86,919 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] The district was the 22nd-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 16,047 students.[6]
