I am an engineer. I see the job of legislators as problem-solving. Every society runs into challenges from time to time, and the best leaders have always been those that look to the people for their solutions. I am a husband and father. Family is the most fundamental unit of a society. It's the responsibility of leaders to do everything they can to ensure that families have stability, prosperity, and opportunity. I am a Taekwondo instructor and student. Discipline, hard work, and perseverance are the hallmarks of successful people and successful societies. I endeavor to build these traits in my students and myself.
  • I will bring the voices of my neighbors in HD-21 to the General Assembly, not the desires of special interests
  • I will fight for a robust healthcare system for the people of HD-21 and all Georgians.
  • I will work with anyone who wants to make the lives of Georgians more secure.
COVID-19 is the most important issue facing us today. I will work to shed light on what went wrong with Georgia's response. I will listen to experts, leaders, and my neighbors to find the best solutions so nothing like this happens again. I will strive to empower local governments to do what's best for their citizens. Most of all I will fight to bring the voices of my neighbors back to the General Assembly on this issue and all issues.
John Lewis stands out right now because of his recent passing. My hero is Mr. Rogers, because he treated everyone like the whole person they are. Jimmy Carter is the politician that inspires me the most.
I am a troubleshooter at heart. I don't believe that I have all the answers. I work well in teams and I get along with people of very different backgrounds and belief systems from my own.
The Challenger explosion. I was 8. Others that stick out are the Berlin Wall falling (10 or 11), the Iraq war (12 or 13), the Florida recount (23), 9/11 (24), and the Great Recession (31)
My first job was working as a busboy at a short-order restaurant. I eventually advanced to being the main night cook. I started at 16 years old and left to go to college. My first job as a professional was working at an air force base as a control systems engineer. I stayed there for 5 and a half years.
Atticus O'Sullivan from the Iron Druid Chronicles.
Larger bodies lead to more specific representation. A Georgia House District has around 54,000 Georgians in it, which is more than the original ratio in the US House of around 37,000 Americans per Representative. Senate Districts have around 173,000 people in it. Obviously this means that there's overlap, too. I believe it gives a good opportunity for a diversity of viewpoints to be brought to the General Assembly.
I don't believe it's reasonable to take a one-size-fits-all approach to what backgrounds are good or bad. People who have spent their lives in the private sector like me bring certain approaches and history, a certain commitment to getting things done, etc. People who have spent their professional lives in government/politics know how to get those things done within the framework of a government of the people. We'll get more done with a good mix of backgrounds. What I believe is most damaging to democracy is adopting some sort of all-or-nothing approach. Some people are really, really good at representing their constituents. Some are really, really good at making the machinery of government work well. We should leverage everyone's talents.
Recovering from the damage brought on by the coronavirus and the mismanagement of the response to it. At the time I'm writing this, we're coming up on 4,000 Georgians who have died. Most of them needlessly. I say that because you can look at states that took the pandemic much more seriously who have lost a lot fewer people. This will haunt us for more than a decade. Climate change is another big threat to Georgia. It's threatening our Atlantic Coast, changing our farming, and more.
Cordial antagonism. We should always challenge each other to bring around the best outcome for the people we serve. The governor should not serve the legislature, and the legislature should not serve the governor. We should all serve the people.
A non-partisan commission that creates 3 proposed maps based on recommendations from research & policy organizations. The legislature would then vote on those maps. Alternatively, the legislature could empower the commission itself to implement the maps, although I'm not entirely clear on the constitutional issues that might present.
The part of me that wants to get things done would probably pick LBJ. Bernie Sanders, for his commitment to his ideals & his constituents. John Lewis for his devotion to treating everyone as an equal.
