Mary Jane McCalla Knisely is a judge on the 13th District Court in Montana. She was elected to the court in 2010.[1] Knisely ran for re-election in 2016. As an incumbent running unopposed, she faced a retention election on November 8, 2016. Knisely won retention in the election.[2]

Education

Knisely earned her B.S. in psychology from Texas Christian University. She received her J.D. from the University of Montana.[3]

Career

After finishing law school, Knisely served as a clerk for Judge Russell K. Fillner. She then became a prosecutor for the City of Billings, Montana, for seven years. In 1997 she was elected as a judge for the Billings Municipal Court. She served in that position for 12 years. In 2010 she was elected as a judge to the 13th District Court.[3]

Montana held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was March 14, 2016.[4] Mary Jane McCalla Knisely was retained in the Montana District 13 (Department 6) election with 84.22 percent of the vote. Knisely won 29.3 percent of the vote in the primary election for the 13th District Court, advancing her to the general election. She defeated Damon L. Gannett, winning 54.68 percent of the vote.[5]

The 43 judges of the Montana District Courts are chosen in nonpartisan elections for six-year terms. At the end of their term, they must run for re-election. If a judge is unopposed for re-election, it becomes a retention election instead.[6]

The chief judge of each district court is chosen annually on the basis of seniority.[6]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[6]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a state resident for at least two years;
  • a resident of the district represented; and
  • licensed to practice law in the state for at least five years.
