Biography
McMahon is from Helena, Mont. He received a bachelor's degree from National American University in Rapid City, S.D., and a J.D. from Gonzaga University Law School. He has worked as an attorney in private practice since 1991.

Montana held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was March 14, 2016.[1] Both candidates advanced from the primary election. Mike McMahon defeated incumbent DeeAnn Cooney in the Montana District 1 (Department 2) general election.[2]

Selection method

The 43 judges of the Montana District Courts are chosen in nonpartisan elections for six-year terms. At the end of their term, they must run for re-election. If a judge is unopposed for re-election, it becomes a retention election instead.[3]
The chief judge of each district court is chosen annually on the basis of seniority.[3]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[3]
- a U.S. citizen;
- a state resident for at least two years;
- a resident of the district represented; and
- licensed to practice law in the state for at least five years.
