DeeAnn Cooney was a judge of the 1st Judicial District Court in Montana. She was appointed by Governor Steve Bullock (D) on December 1, 2015, to replace Judge Jeffrey M. Sherlock.[1][2] Cooney ran for election to her seat in 2016 but was defeated.

Cooney received a bachelor's degree from the University of Montana and a J.D. from Antioch School of Law. Prior to her judicial appointment, Cooney was the owner of her solo practice, the Cooney Law Firm.[1]

Montana held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was March 14, 2016.[3] Both candidates advanced from the primary election. Mike McMahon defeated incumbent DeeAnn Cooney in the Montana District 1 (Department 2) general election.[4]

The 43 judges of the Montana District Courts are chosen in nonpartisan elections for six-year terms. At the end of their term, they must run for re-election. If a judge is unopposed for re-election, it becomes a retention election instead.[5]

The chief judge of each district court is chosen annually on the basis of seniority.[5]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[5]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a state resident for at least two years;
  • a resident of the district represented; and
  • licensed to practice law in the state for at least five years.
