What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
My top priority will be to create an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all David Douglas Students. This is how I want my own kids to feel when they go to school in the morning and I know that this is the best learning environment for all of our children. I second priority is to make sure that our kids have access to technology in the classroom. Everything today has a technological element, from our phones to our cars and even our shoes and toasters have electronic "brains." Sending our kids out into the world without computer literacy is sending them into the work-force with both arms tied behind their backs. I firmly believe that computer literacy should be more then a extra-curricular activity, it should be a subject. My third priority will be to help make sure that your hard-earned tax money gets to the students that it is meant to serve. As a long-term government employee I know that even the best run bureaucratic systems can have wasteful spending habits. It will be my job as a school board member to be your financial watchdog.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
The abundance and amazing variety of parks in Portland makes me extremely proud to live here. I really appreciate our local governments emphasis on preserving and enhancing accessible green spaces.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Growing up I was blessed to have two wonderful sets of grandparents to look up to. Each of my grandmothers and grandfathers had different strengths. My grandpa Don had an easy manner that commanded attention and admiration. My grandpa Dan was an imposing person and the embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit. My grandma Kate was gifted with charm, elegance and spirituality to spare. My grandma Jody was the picture of a caring mother who gave so much of herself to her family. I was so grateful to grow up knowing and learning from each of them and I strive to take the things that they taught me to make this world a better place.
