I'm married for 37 years to Gary Rutherford. We have one son, Stephen. I'm a retired teacher who has spent 22 years in the classroom. I have taught thousands of students and helped them excel in higher education and life.
  • Our children deserve better! We need to get back to being the best! At one time the St. Tammany Parish School System was TOP, but now we are ranked 18th. Clearly, we are not utilizing our supportive community resources to maximize our teachers' potential. I want to see CHANGE!
  • We need to address teacher and substitute shortages. We need to work harder to retain our teachers. We also need to quickly do background checks and get people signed up to substitute. We can't have this continue the way it is.
  • Accountability and transparency are key. My priorities would be to hold the school board accountable fiscally, to be an accessible voice for my constituents and district employees, and move forward in a positive direction.
Transparency! We need to make sure that the public has easy access to understand the budget and policies.
I look up to my sister, Tammy. She has the biggest heart and is the kindest person I know. She is very forgiving and always finds the best in every situation. I want to be more like her because she is so positive and kind.
I think the most important characteristics for this position are honesty and integrity.
I'm a hard worker and determined to help our school system.
I would like to be able to say that our school system improved in the four years of serving on the board.
The first historical event that I remember was when Armstrong landed on the moon in 1969. I was nine years old.
I worked at Burger King when I was 16. I had it for almost two years. I worked during the summer and into my senior year.
The Christmas Box is a favorite because it tells a wonderful story of what Christmas is really all about.
School members’ roles are to represent students, teachers, and parents and serve as a liaison to the superintendent and administration and work effectively together.
The voters of District 3, students, teachers, and parents of St. Tammany.
Discipline gets in the way of a quality education. We need to have a committee of teachers, parents, and school board members to come up with a discipline policy that would benefit everyone and mandate it. Then we need to make sure that we back it up when the time comes to do so.
I don't think that everyone needs to attend a 4 year university. I think students should have more opportunities to take classes that prepare them for a technical school or some advanced classes in some field of interest. I think students would benefit tremendously from apprenticeships or internships.
We need to continue to have MHPs available in our schools to help our students and staff.
My favorite joke is, "I know the kids don't like you and pick on you, but you have to go to school...You're the teacher!"
Constituents and employees of STPPS could easily contact me through email or phone call at any time. I plan to be very involved in the school that I will represent. I volunteer weekly now at LHMS in the office.
