Two seats on the Alhambra Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Board of Education members from Districts 4 and 5 were up for re-election.[1] District 4 incumbent Robert L. Gin ran unopposed and won the general election. No candidates filed for the District 5 seat.[2]
The last time the District 4 and District 5 seats were up for election in 2010, the election was canceled due to lack of opposition.[3] This happened again in 2012 when the members from Districts 1, 2 and 3 were up for election.[4]
About the district
Alhambra Unified School District is located in Los Angeles County in southwestern California. The county seat is Los Angeles. Los Angeles County was home to 10,116,705 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] During the 2012-2013 school year, the Alhambra Unified School District was the 90th-largest school district by enrollment in California and served 18,076 students.[6]
Demographics
Los Angeles County underperformed compared to the rest of California in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 30.7 percent for California as a whole. The median household income for Los Angeles County was $55,909 compared to $61,094 for the entire state. The percentage of people below poverty level was 17.8 percent compared to 15.9 percent statewide.[5]

Voter and candidate information
The Alhambra Unified School District Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic districts. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014, and three seats were up for election in 2016.[1][8]
In order to get on the ballot, candidates had to file their nomination documents and candidate statements with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder during the nomination period, which began July 14, 2014, and ended August 8, 2014.[9]
The first day voters could apply to vote by mail was October 6, 2014, and the last day to apply was October 28, 2014. The last day voters could register to vote was October 20, 2014.[9]

This election was canceled due to lack of opposition. Robert L. Gin from Trustee Area 4 won re-election by default. No candidates filed for the Trustee Area 5 seat.[10]

Campaign finance
At the time of this election, the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk did not publish school board candidate campaign finance reports online. Ballotpedia staffers requested this information, but the only free method of viewing the files was at their office.
The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk targeted the end of 2018 to make school board candidate campaign finance reports available online for free. From that point forward, Ballotpedia began including campaign finance data for Los Angeles County school board candidates.[11][12][13]

2012District 1 representative Adele Andrade-Stadler and District 3 representative Patricia Rodriguez-Mackintosh ran unopposed for re-election and won their seats by default. Jane C. Anderson's challenger for District 2 failed to file enough signatures to get on the ballot, so the school district canceled the election due to lack of opposition.[4] 2010District 4 representative Robert L. This election shared the ballot with municipal elections, other school board elections and a special election for the Altadena Library District Special Parcel Tax measure.[1] It also shared the ballot with general elections for multiple state executive offices, seats in the U.S. House, as well as seats in the state Senate and the state Assembly.[14] A countywide measure was on the ballot as well. Measure P asked voters to approve an annual special tax to continue funding for neighborhood park safety, gang prevention, recreation and wildlife protection from an expired voter-approved measure.[15]
