A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Arizona utilizes a semi-closed primary system. Unaffiliated voters may choose which party's primary they will vote in, but voters registered with a party can only vote in that party's primary.[1][2][3]

For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.

Key Messages

Samantha believes a fully-funded public education system is essential to maintaining our democratic republic. They support student debt relief, and working toward publicly funded higher education.

Severson will fight to enforce fair housing laws and will work to pass legislation that will prevent property owners from using services that coordinate rents, thereby increasing housing costs beyond the average American threshold. She supports Senate bill S.2224 - Stop Predatory Investing Act, which proposes to remove tax benefits for Wall Street firms that buy up large numbers of single-family homes

As a born and raised Arizonan, Severson advocates for immigration reform that will result in strong border security coupled with an earned pathway to citizenship. Severson was a vocal supporter of the bipartisan bill H.R.2 - Secure the Border Act, which would have funded additional border agents and closed the border if too crowded. The immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed, and Severson will take up the mantle to fight for the rights of all people, regardless of their immigration status, and will ensure laws about asylum seekers are enforced.
