Benjamin Lawsky
Benjamin Lawsky was the superintendent of financial services for New York. He was the first person to serve in this role since the office was created in 2011. He was appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo (D).[1]
An April 2013 list of the 100 most powerful players in Albany by the newspaper City and State ranked Lawsky as number 52.[2]
Biography
After earning his law degree, Lawsky began a long career in public service, working as a federal prosecutor, an aide to Senator Charles Schumer (D) and deputy counselor, special assistant to then-Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.[1]
When Cuomo was elected governor, Lawsky became his chief of staff. During that time, Lawsky led Gov. Andrew Cuomo's initiative to consolidate the New York State banking and insurance departments, which led to the creation of the Department of Financial Services and the position of superintendent. After serving as the inaugural superintendent for nearly four years, he announced his resignation, saying that he planned to establish his own legal consulting firm.[1][3]
