What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Economic Development- I know we need to do more to support our small business community, especially in District 5, so that they can create jobs that pay a living wage to our residents. We need to work towards filling some of the empty buildings in our City with businesses that make sense for our community and provide essential goods and services for the residents of St. Petersburg. Housing and Infrastructure- Right now, our City is facing an attainable housing crisis and we need to increase housing opportunities for all of our residents. As a board member for the Sustainable Communities Renaissance Project for over five years, I know this problem won’t be solved overnight. I'm ready to bring my experience and know-how to council and fight for tangible change for the people of St. Pete. Environmental Protection- I've been been an active member of the Sierra Club for over 30 years and a lifelong defender of the environment. Our City is leading the way in sustainability and environmental protection, but there’s still more that we can be doing. As a member of City Council, I'll be committed to protecting our urban trees, continuing to improve our transportation system, and making our City more pedestrian friendly, as well as informing citizens about resources available to them to help them “Go Green.”
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
One of the areas of public policy I'm most passionate about is public engagement. St. Petersburg has had some incredible achievements over the past few years, but we have our struggles, too. Right now, I believe that St. Pete is at a crossroads. We have a lot of important decisions to make in the next few years about housing, the character of our city, and transportation. None of these issues are easy, but we need to decide what direction we want our city to take. We need to make these choices together. We need to implement a holistic approach when it comes to solving the city’s problems. To me, that starts connecting every community to City Hall and working together to create solutions that work for everyone. As a longtime volunteer and organizer, I know what can be accomplished when we harness our collective power and work towards a common goal, and that's exactly what we're going to do once I'm elected.
