I have worked with students and families within the Western Heights School District for 8+ years. I have built strong and lasting relationships with students, families, educators, and community stakeholders. In my professional capacity, I helped to provide free meals and groceries to students and families within the district and worked with educators and community leaders to provide space for important meetings and actions that were taking place in relation to the school district. I am a proven leader and parent of a future Western Heights student who has put the time in to understand the issues the district faces and get involved. I was selected to be on the district's Community Connection Team in order to help improve the community's relationship with the district by identifying ways to connect with community partners and increase community engagement with the district.
  • I am deeply invested in the future of the district, not only for the students that I have built relationships with, but for my own children.
  • I bring unique perspective as someone who has worked in direct services with the patrons of this district.
  • I believe Western Heights can be on the cutting edge of excellence and innovation within education in the Oklahoma City metro.
Western Heights is a school district full of students and families who have been and are marginalized in various ways. My deepest concern and area of greatest passion is ensuring that all students in the district have access to an education that will give them the greatest opportunity to succeed as adults. I believe Western Heights can provide that education with good leadership in place that chart a new course for the district.
I am both passionate and eager to learn how to be the best board member I can possibly be. I am experienced with students, families, and educators within the district and believe that those relationships have proven and will continue to prove essential to understanding the full context of the district. I am a capable leader who believes in leading from a position of humility.
My first full-time job was at Reaching Our City, a nonprofit located within the Western Heights School District. Previously interning there for 4 years, I worked there full-time another 4+ years, serving as Food Resource Manager and Associate Pastor to Youth & Families. Both roles encompassed many things, including providing meals to students, serving as a liaison to Western Heights educators, and coordinating with community leaders for monthly meetings on site regarding the district, as examples.
I believe when educators feel they are supported, they are best positioned to perform well and provide quality education to students. I trust the leadership currently in place within the district and their ability to make decisions within their buildings that are best for the students, as well as the staff and faculty. Beyond that, I believe it is essential to connect students and families to important resources that are found outside of our schools. Education should, in some ways, be holistic in the sense that we are invested in the whole lives of students and care about their well-being, safety, and access to resources, apart from simply being concerned with their education.
I know parents of many students in the district and have relationships with them. I also believe in making myself available in any way that I can to parents of the district. My personal phone number and email are readily available to whoever may need them, and I live in the community and welcome community members to approach me whenever they see me in public. I am an open and honest person and will carry that into this position.
I think our best strategy is making sure that Western Heights is a district where people want to work. This starts with leadership making the current staff, faculty, and administration feel supported and in the best position to succeed, as well as holding them accountable when necessary. I believe that we are in a good spot in that regard and will continue to grow stronger. Another simple but effective strategy is making sure that we are publicly sharing the good things happening within the district. This district has been plagued by negative news coverage for some time, so the narrative must change, starting with the small and big victories that are won daily on Western Heights' campuses. We continue to make strides in these areas and still have room to improve.
