Candidate Connection

Britney Sharp completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Sharp's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

-Creating and sustaining safe environments conducive to learning - Bringing in more programming to better prepare students for the real world (field work, internships, more career tech ed programming, as well as the arts, music, and sports) - Employing more social workers in every school consistently and frequently, while also increasing relevant resources to special education programming

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Safety is policy that I am passionate about because I understand that the more the secure the environment, the more likely the students are to retain content. Safety is also a precursor to yielding whole students who are more likely to be successful producing civility and positive growth in our society.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Humility, passion, servitude, integrity, wisdom, and tenacity.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Certified baby-sitter for 6 years.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

To make sure that every decision made is going to ultimately benefit the student's well being.

How will you build relationships with members of the broader community? Which groups, organizations, stakeholders will you specifically target?

The students need support from the community from a financial stand point (philanthropic dollars) but also through presence. Students need to know that the dollars came through for resources, but there are physical bodies who would be of great service to take the time out to root for them and mentor them. Universities, community colleges, and trade programs would be targeted to help provide programming but also incentives for graduation and post secondary education.

What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?

Parental involement is not just physical presence in schools, but could be also presence at home relating to school in the form of homework help or communication availability on behalf of the student. To foster this, it's important to connect with parents early on with consistent positive engagement to create positive trusted relationships. It's also important to seek parental presence and input on school activities, create more opportunities for students and parents to engage in such as game nights, dances, walks, fairs, presentations, meeting, and projects etc.

In what areas would you like to expand curriculum? For example, do you see a need for advanced technical training or apprenticeships? What sort of innovative programming would you advance if given the opportunity?

There needs to be more hands on programming for students for the real world ( i.e Career Tech Ed Training, apprenticeships, and field work), early childhood dual language learning, life skills training, and more social skill training for special education programming.

What strategies or plans would you advance to ensure the schools are properly funded?

Using financial accountability of the current funding, seeking state funding, philanthropic dollars, and fundraising.

What principles drive your policies for safety in schools?

Every child deserves to learn in a safe and secure environment.

How might you support the mental health needs of students/faculty/staff?

There needs to be social workers / psychologists in every school consistently for students and staff to debrief with coupled with daily behavioral/cognitive exercises throughout the school community to aid in positive coping and healing mechanisms.
