Bruce Lightner was a candidate for the nonpartisan District 1 seat on the San Diego City Council in California. He was defeated in the primary election on June 7, 2016.

Lightner obtained a B.A. in chemistry with a minor in economics from the University of California, San Diego, where he also did graduate studies in geo- and cosmochemistry, computers, and electronics. He works as an engineer and inventor, holding 34 U.S. patents in computer architecture, electronics, and software algorithm design. Lightner is a registered Republican, but stated to Ballotpedia that he is "strictly non-partisan with respect to San Diego politics."[1]
