Two seats on the Christian County Public Schools Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
District 3 incumbent Barry D. Cornelius was defeated by challenger Lindsey Clark and District 5 incumbent Mary DeBow lost to Tom Bell.[1]
About the district
Christian County Public Schools is located in Christian County, Kentucky. The county seat is Hopkinsville. Christian County is home to 74,167 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Christian County Public Schools was the 13th-largest school district in Kentucky and served 9,401 students.[3]
Demographics
Christian County underperformed compared to the rest of Kentucky in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 14.2 percent of Christian County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 21.0 percent for Kentucky as a whole. The median household income for Christian County was $37,750 compared to $42,610 for the state of Kentucky. The percentage of people below poverty level for Christian County was 21.3 percent while it was 18.6 percent for the state of Kentucky.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Christian County Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Each member is elected to a specific geographic district. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which ended on August 12, 2014. The deadline to withdraw was on August 25, 2014. Write-in candidates had to file by October 24, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[5]

Tom Bell was endorsed by Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp.[6]
Campaign finance
Candidates who raised or spent over $3,000 during the election cycle had to file all pre-election and post-election campaign finance reports. Those raised or spent less than $3,000 were only required to file a 30-day post-election report, while those who raised or spent less than $1,000 did not have to file any reports.[7]

There were two seats on the school board up for election on November 4, 2014. District 3 incumbent Barry D. Cornelius ran against challenger Lindsey Clark and District 5 incumbent Mary DeBow faced Tom Bell.

Loss of grant money
In August 2014 it was estimated that if a proposed reduction of U.S. Army troops at Fort Campbell went through, Christian County Public Schools would lose approximately $5.3 million in grants it received based on the percentage of military students in the school system.[8]
