A Clarkston Independence District Library Levy proposal was on the November 6, 2012 election ballot in Oakland County, which is in Michigan, where the vote was too close to call.
If approved, this proposal would have authorized Clarkston Independence District to levy an up to 1.25 mills property tax ($1.25 per $1,000 of assessed taxable valuation) for 8 years for the purpose of funding the Clarkston Independence District Library (99.4%) and for the purpose of helping to fund the Charter Township of Independence Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority (0.6%). The estimated first year revenue from this tax is $1,710,000.[1]

Language on the ballot:
“ | Shall the Clarkston Independence District Library, County of Oakland, Michigan, levy an amount not to exceed 1.25 mills ($1.25 on each $1,000 of taxable value) against all taxable real and tangible personal property within the Clarkston Independence District Library District for a period of eight (8) years, 2012 to 2019, inclusive, for the purpose of providing funds for all District Library purposes authorized by law; and shall the District Library levy such new additional millage for said purpose? The estimate of the revenue the Clarkston Independence District Library will collect if the millage is approved and levied by the District Library in the 2012 calendar year is approximately $1,710,000. It is estimated that 99.4% of the annual millage revenue would be dispersed to the Clarkston Independence District Library for all District Library purposes authorized by law and, as required by law, 0.6% would be disbursed to the Charter Township of Independence Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority. The amount disbursed to the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority shall be collected solely from properties within the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority District.[1][2] | ” |
