Three of the seven seats on the New Bedford Public Schools School Committee were up for nonpartisan general election on November 7, 2017. The mayor of New Bedford, who served as an ex-officio member of the board, was also up for election, but that election was not covered by Ballotpedia as the city fell outside of municipal elections coverage.[1] Incumbent Josh Amaral and newcomers Colleen Dawicki and John Oliveira won the election, defeating Rich Porter.[2] Margaret Amaral initially filed to run in the election, but she withdrew from the race.[3][4]

Nevertheless, it’s clear from my experience, research, and–most importantly–my conversations with parents, teachers, and city leaders–that progress on the following fronts will make a difference for our kids and our district.

Early education – Closing the achievement gap depends on giving our kids an early and high-quality start to their learning.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) – Building these skills enhances the classroom experience for students and teachers, but it also gives kids the tools to be successful adults.

Year-round enrichment – To be a city where all kids thrive, we must ensure education continues beyond the classroom by improving access to sports, music, art, outdoor exploration, and other types of experiential learning.[5]
