David Koch is a long-time advocate for youth and young adults in Horry County. Director of Young Adult Services at Sea Haven and a resident of Longs, David and his wife, Jeanne, moved to the Grand Strand in 1985. They have three sons, their youngest now attending North Myrtle Beach High as a Senior and its he Drum Major for the Band of Chiefs marching band.

He has worked with Shoreline Behavioral Health as a Substance Abuse Specialist, Brunswick Christian Recovery Center as an Interim Director, and completed his internship at Teen Challenge of Georgetown County. Very active in Waterbrook Community Church, David is on the Leadership Team of North Strand Celebrate Recovery and an active member of Broken Chains Motorcycle Ministry. David earned a Bachelor’s in Human Services from Purdue University, with a concentration in Family / Youth Services and Administration.

David has spent years working with children and young adults; volunteering in the schools, churches, the First Tee program, little league baseball, and flag football leagues. He is currently a Board member of the NMBHS Band of Chiefs Boosters. He has always been a champion and advocate for youth.

  • My top priority is ensuring that our student's curriculum will prepare them for, not only a college career, but shift to include those students that may not be fit for that pathway. If elected, I'd like to serve on the board’s curriculum committee where I will always be in on changes and new material. I feel it is a priority for me to be part of the discussion. I am all about unbiased learning on every subject but I want it to be unbiased. I’ll fight against any kind of indoctrination or ideas that lean either way,
  • Of course the safety and security of our students is something that is always on everyone's mind. The school district needs to spend as much time and funding as needed to ensure that our students, teachers, and faculty are safe. The school board has made some important steps toward security measures and we need to continue on that path. Again, no expense should be spared, all stakeholders need to be able to be assured that the schools are safe for all.
  • I feel that trust has been broken down between the district and students, teachers, and parents. This mistrust can only lead to students not performing up to their potential, teachers leaving in search of a new work environment, and parents who are disconnected and angry. I will work to open the lines of communication to help those who have something to say, have a forum to speak their mind, in a safe and friendly environment. I will use creative thinking to come up with new platforms for all to voice their opinions and utilize the information to shape my votes and conversations as a board member.
K-12 Public Education in South Carolina has long been a source of disappointment for me. Although 2021 has seen another rise to 83.3%, that is still a far cry from what is acceptable. I am a School Choice advocate, with the belief that all students are unique and thrive in different environments with different learning techniques. I also advocate the inter-district open enrollment policy, giving parents the right to choose what is best for their children.

Budget and finance also are top on my list of concerns as it relates not only to our school district but to all aspects of Horry County's health as an important part of the South Carolina landscape. It is obviously important for me to be in tune with what is going on in legislation and to work with our local Senators to advocate for our district. Locally, I will always be an advocate for certain financial policies that would benefit our schools directly with the least amount of impact on our local residents.
