Following his election as the 45th President of the United States in 2016, Donald Trump and his transition team considered individuals to fill two positions related to national intelligence—the Director of the CIA and the Director of National Intelligence. Both positions are tasked with working to preempt threats and further US national security objectives by collecting intelligence that matters.

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) was confirmed as Director of the CIA on January 23, 2017. Sen Dan Coats (R-Ind.) was confirmed as Director of National Intelligence on March 15, 2017.
