Three seats on the East Allen County School Board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

The District 1 race pitted newcomers Timothy E. Hines and Luray A. Riggle against one another, while the District 2 race featured challengers Richard A. Allgeier and Leland Etzler. In District 3, incumbent Stephen L. Terry Sr. ran against challengers Paulette Nellems and Kerri Zurbuch for the seat. District 1 board member William D. Hartman and District 2 board member Neil S. Reynolds did not file for re-election.[1][2]

Timothy E. Hines defeated fellow newcomer Luray A. Riggle in the District 1 race, while Leland Etzler overcame Richard A. Allgeier for the District 2 seat. In District 3, board member Stephen L. Terry Sr. and Kerri Zurbuch lost to challenger Paulette Nellems.

East Allen County Schools is located in Allen County, Indiana. The county seat is Fort Wayne. Allen County is home to 363,014 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, East Allen County Schools was the 25th-largest school district in Indiana and served 9,452 students.[4]

Demographics

Allen County overperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.4 percent of Allen County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for Allen County was $50,030 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for Allen County was 14.4 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The East Allen School Board consists of seven members elected by specific geographic district to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[6]
