Church suspended (2015)
The Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission (MJTC) issued a judicial disciplinary recommendation against Church on December 16, 2015. Accused of dismissing or modifying charges in at least 20 criminal cases without holding a proper hearing and dismissing at least 32 ticket cases without holding a hearing or consulting the prosecutor, Church faced a 120-day suspension. The MJTC concluded that Church had "harmed the public’s perception of the judiciary and recognizes that her actions were improper."[5]
Church accepted the suspension suggested by the MJTC, and, in May 2016, the Michigan Supreme Court agreed to the settlement between Church and the MJTC: a 120 suspension without pay. The court said that the judge deserved a harsher penalty but noted that she had taken responsibility for her actions.[6][7]
