Two seats on the Floyd Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014, for Districts 1 and 4. Since all candidates that filed are Republican, the results were decided in a primary election on May 20, 2014.

In the District 1 race, Chip Hood defeated incumbent Terry Williamson and fellow challenger Tony Potts. Newcomer Tony Daniel overcame fellow challenger Rodney Dillard for the District 4 seat. Hood and Daniel won in the general election unopposed.

Floyd County Schools is located in Floyd County, Georgia. The county seat of Floyd County is Rome. Floyd County is home to 96,317 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Floyd County Schools was the 36th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 10,220 students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]

Demographics

Floyd County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.2 percent of Floyd County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Floyd County was $41,442 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Floyd County was 20.9 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Floyd County Board of Education is a partisan board that consists of five members elected to four-year terms. They serve by geographic district. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014 and a general election was held on November 4, 2014 for two seats. Since all candidates are Republican, the results were be decided in the primary. Three seats will be up for election in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]

Additional elections on the ballot

The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate.
