Campaign themes

2014

Broomell listed the following themes on his campaign website.[2]

  • Education: "Lately, teachers have become a popular target for politicians and pundits. These are the men and women sacrificing countless hours, and often their own money, to ensure that the children in our community are getting the education they need to succeed. We should not be making their lives more difficult. Instead, we need to begin a serious and open discussion with teachers about the issues they see facing their classrooms. By building a partnership with those on the ground level and in the classrooms, we can ensure that we prioritize the needs of students and their teachers based on the real situations facing them."
  • Economy: "We have an economy that has shifted away from manufacturing jobs and young adults saddled with immense student loan debt. Students leaving high school shouldn't have to face a choice between high unemployment or high costs of tuition. Support for trade and vocational schools can provide opportunities for those not interested in college, and lower federal student loan interest rates can reduce the overall burden many graduates face for years after graduating."
  • Minimum Wage: "Studies have consistently shown that raising the minimum wage has no discernible effect on unemployment. Therefore a reasonable rise in the national minimum wage, such as the one recently passed in New Jersey, will help American workers and place more money back into our economy."
  • National Security: "Events in Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Ukraine, and even Boston last year show that we still live in a dangerous world. We must be prepared to protect our national interests, but we must also have a serious discussion about what those interests are. If we are to use American force and put service members in harms way, we must know why and what our goal is. I will not vote to send my friends or our neighbors into harms way without a strong, justifiable reason."
  • Veterans: "I will work to protect the things service members have earned through their services in Afghanistan and Iraq and around the world. As we face times of budget tightening we should ensure that the ones who have sacrificed in war are not the only ones asked to sacrifice in the current budget deals."
