Greta Callahan is a single mom, teacher, and labor leader based in Southwest Minneapolis. She is the former President of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and began teaching kindergarten in North Minneapolis since 2011. Greta was a finalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 2017, has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Augsburg University, is a graduate of Cornell's Midwest Labor Leadership Initiative, is the former Executive Vice President of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, and sat on the Governing Board of Education Minnesota and the General Board of the Minnesota AFL-CIO. Greta began her career in a charter school, which is why she has dedicated her life to fighting for strong public schools. In Greta’s free time she does yoga, walks her two pugs, and goes fishing in the summer.
  • If we have strong public schools we have a safer, more equitable, healthier, smarter city.

We will have a stronger public school system when we focus on growth and expansion by retaining our current families, and attracting the 42% of eligible MPS families who are currently not choosing MPS by:

-Providing stability in guaranteed programming that families want -Keeping our promises and not disrupting school programs and pathways that families have chosen for their child(ren) -Retaining high-quality educators -Providing individualized/differentiated instruction through smaller class sizes -Co-creating the MPS we all deserve with those who are on the ground floor.

Join me in this optimistic vision of what is possible for MPS!
  • As a parent, teacher, and leader in the Minneapolis Public Schools I have been fighting so hard for over a decade to improve MPS. We need those at the top to be fighting just as hard as those of us on the ground floor for a public schools system that gives all students the education they deserve. Based on my experiences, expertise, and relationships, I am the most qualified candidate running for school board in the Minneapolis Public Schools, and look forward to continuing my life of serving our students in this new capacity once elected.
  • MPS is at a turning point and many would say we are in a crisis. During a crisis we can’t start from scratch, we need someone who is experienced, qualified, and already has the relationships necessary to hit the ground running once elected. I continue to hear that we need to “build bridges” right now in MPS. As someone who has been the ambassador between the ground floor and the top of this district for years, I can tell you that the bridge is already built and I am that bridge.
As someone who has been in leadership and governance for almost a decade (and has learned from many mistakes), it is critical for an elected official to listen, be responsive, communicate well, be transparent, and as an elected school board director- one must center students in all decision-making.
I would like to leave a legacy of expanding and growing the Minneapolis Public Schools. This will happen when we not only improve our schools, but also educate the public around the dangers of the corporate ed reform movement, and the role public schools can play in a thriving society.
The board is responsible for governance, policy, directing the superintendent’s work, and ensuring that we have a strong MPS where students, families, and educators want to be. This involves creating and maintaining relationships with all levels of staff at MPS and with our constituents in Minneapolis. This also involves true co-creation of plans that will impact students, families, educators, and staff.
