General: He was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 41 percent of the vote. He competed against Cheri Siler-Mack.

Judicial performance evaluation
In July 2014, the North Carolina Bar Association released the results of a survey in which it asked lawyers to rate the judicial candidates for the trial courts. The candidates were rated from one to five on five different criteria as well as on their overall performance.[2]

Education
Gilliam received his undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University and his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Campbell University School of Law.[3]
Career
Gilliam began his career as an Assistant District Attorney before starting his own law practice, Gilliam Law Firm, PLLC. Gilliam helps clients with elder law, real estate transactions, civil litigation, criminal defense, business law, special proceedings and appeals. As an appointed Public Guardian for Cumberland County, Gilliam protects the assets of many elderly and disabled citizens.[3]
