James Hackett is a judge of the Illinois 5th District Appellate Court. He assumed office on August 8, 2025. His current term ends on December 7, 2026.

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Hackett to the Illinois Court of Appeals on July 25, 2025 to replace Thomas Welch (Illinois).[1]

Education

Hackett received a B.A. from St. Louis University and later earned his J.D. there as well. He was admitted to the bar in 1978.[2]

Career

From 1995 to 2013, Hackett served the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Madison County, Illinois, as a resident circuit judge.[3][4] He was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court effective June 7, 2013, to fill the vacancy created when Ann Callis resigned. His term was set to expire on December 1, 2014, but he resigned on August 29, 2014.[3][5]

He previously practiced law with Meyer and Hackett and has experience both as a city attorney and as a Madison County special public defender.[6]
