|Joel is a graduate of Arapahoe High School, Taylor University and Denver Seminary and had over twelve years experience working with children, youth, and families before starting Edgewater Collective. He has served on the Lumberg Elementary PTA, Jefferson Jr/Sr High School Accountability Committee (SAC), and Jeffco Public Schools District Accountability Committee (DAC). Joel’s wife Hillary started her education career as a paraprofessional at Lumberg Elementary and now is a preschool director in Littleton.
Joel is motivated by the opportunity to ensure that all Jeffco students have an opportunity to succeed to college or career.Safe Schools: As parents and caregivers, we put quite a bit of trust in school leaders, educators, and staff to care for our children during the school day. We hope that the school environment is safe for them as they grow and learn. One of the core foundations of public education is that our schools are safe for every student. A student cannot learn and thrive if they don’t feel safe at school. There must be policies and systems in place to ensure this is a reality and provide safe spaces where students can give feedback when it is not the reality.
- Inspired to Learn: Students and educators deserve school buildings and spaces that inspire them to learn and grow. This is especially true in east central Jefferson County where a majority of students come from historically marginalized communities. Educators and students in these schools work hard every day in school buildings that are older and less inspiring than school buildings to the north, south, and west. This commitment to equity goes beyond school buildings to the classes offered, enrichment programs, and much more. Our students, educators, and families in east central Jefferson County deserve to have the same access to inspiring learning spaces, classes, and programs that students in other areas of the county receive.
Prepared for College or Career: Though the work might seem daunting given everything we’ve collectively faced over the last three years, the best years for our students and educators can be ahead of us. Jeffco’s focus on Reimagining High School is an opportunity for the community to come together and reimagine what the high school experience can look like. Today’s preschool students will enter a college and career landscape that will look different than today and we can be proactive in preparing them with the tools for that world. Students at each Jeffco high school should have access to excellent career pathways at their schools where they can explore and experience various careers.
