Campaign themes
2014
Humphrey's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
NYSAFE Act
- Excerpt: "John Humphrey believes that the NYSAFE Act only serves to infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens, does nothing to improve public safety and is an unjust law. The NYSAFE Act must be eliminated either by judicial action or repeal."
Business Environment
- Excerpt: "As your representative in Albany, John Humphrey will work towards reducing regulations and taxes on small businesses and making New York a better place to do business."
Taxes and spending
- Excerpt: "New York State has the highest rate of spending in the nation and New Yorkers have the highest overall tax bill. People are migrating out of the state at an alarming rate and moving to more economically friendly states. We need to change that."
Shrinking state government
- Excerpt: "Albany needs to reduce the unfunded mandates on local governments and reduce the bureaucracy. Local communities are best at determining what their needs are, not politicians who have never set foot in them."
Education
- Excerpt: "Students need to be taught HOW to think, not WHAT to think. The parents are the first teachers of their children and homeschooling restrictions need to be loosened to allow those who choose to educate their children at home to do so with minimal state oversight."
- Excerpt: "School districts are top heavy in the administration – every school district has a superintendent plus a principal and vice principal for every building. We need to re-examine this system to see if we can find ways to make the education system more efficient."
