Jose L. Fuentes was a judge of the New Jersey Supreme Court. He assumed office on January 3, 2022. He left office on September 1, 2022.

Biography

Fuentes graduated from Montclair State College in 1978 and Rutgers Law School in 1982.[1]

Fuentes was a presiding judge on the New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division. He replaced former Judge Donald Collester in Part A on September 1, 2009.[2]

Fuentes' professional experience includes working private practice lawyer with a focus on municipal land use, tenant/landlord law, matrimonial and family law, general real estate, and civil rights litigation. He worked for Hudson County as a mediator and arbitrator for the General Equity Division and a Guardian ad Litem and mediator for the Family Part. He also served on the Union City Municipal Court. In 1993, Fuentes was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Florio.[2][1]

The seven justices of the New Jersey Supreme Court are selected by gubernatorial appointment. The governor's nominee must be confirmed by the New Jersey state Senate.[4][5]

Justices serve an initial term of seven years after appointment. If renominated by the governor and confirmed for reappointment by the Senate, they may serve on the court until they reach the mandatory retirement age of 70.[4][5]

Qualifications

To be eligible to serve on the supreme court, a person must have been admitted to practice law in New Jersey for at least 10 years.[5]

Chief justice

The chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court is selected by gubernatorial appointment. The position of chief justice is a specific seat on the court rather than a temporary leadership position.[5]
