Campaign themes
2014
Mercer's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Jobs and Economy
- Excerpt: "The growth and welfare of Nevada depends on its residents being employed and making a liveable wage. Having studied and earned a degree in economics I understand what makes an economy thrive. I want to create and vote through bills that will encourage businesses to move to Nevada, encourage existing businesses to expand, encourage Nevadans to open new businesses, and help existing businesses stay open and thrive. A fully employed Nevada will pave the road for an economic recovery."
Education
- Excerpt: "Improving the education system in Nevada is very important to me. We must invest in our childrens elementary and higher education. An educated population creates a thriving educated workforce, for there is no greater investment than an investment in human capital."
Senior Citizens
- Excerpt: "Seniors are our greatest generation. They built this nation through hard work and dedication. We need to continue to pass laws that protect them against individuals and businesses looking to take advantage of them. Seniors are an important part of the Nevada economy, with their spending during retirement years. They raised us when we were young and vulnerable. Now we need to make sure we look out for them in their golden years."
Tourism
- Excerpt: "The Nevada economy is highly dependent on tourism. Our casinos, hotels, and other local businesses depend on visitors to come to Nevada and spend their money in these establishments. This generates tax revenue and jobs across the entire state. I will work with the LVCA, LVVCC and other tourism agencies to continue to bring conventions, out of state visitors, and foreigners to our state. Full occupancy in our state’s hotels equates to a thriving state economy."
Veterans
- Excerpt: "Veterans are near and dear to my heart. I am a proud United States Marine Corps Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran. Veterans sacrifice many years of time away from their families and put their lives on the line to protect this great nation. Many come back from deployment carrying wounds not only on their bodies, but deep inside of their minds. We must do all that we can to thank our veterans and ensure that they continue to receive the benefits that this nation owes them. I promise I will be one of the biggest veterans advocate in Carson City."
