As the Executive Director of Kids On Point, I have been committed to building strong partnerships with students and their families. For 7 years, I've helped build Kids On Point, an organization whose mission is to provide access and opportunity for students living in underserved neighborhoods through year-round academic, athletic, and enrichment programming. I'm an ardent proponent of working in collaboration to create successful outcomes for every student and school. My background is in public health education, fundraising, and grant writing, with a focus on the nonprofit sector. I want to bring my passion, knowledge, and commitment to the School Board so that every child and school are given the resources and opportunity to thrive.
- Transparency
- Community
- Engagement
Our state school system trails other states by nearly every measure, it is hampered by gaping racial and economic disparities, funded by an archaic budget system, and is classified as one of the worst states for teacher support and pay. All of these factors continue to create an achievement and opportunity divide that needs to be addressed. My focus would be on long term change and sustainability, not quick fixes and empty promises.
I believe in the power of the community and in collaborative partnerships. My approach as a leader is transparency and creating a foundation of trust. I'm invested in holding myself, the school district, and other school board members accountable for our decisions. Ensuring that we are meeting the needs of our students, families, and teachers. It would be my responsibility as a school board representative to work with District 20 and other school board members to understand the issues and utilize the guidance of community members' in making decisions.
The Charleston County School Board has the responsibility to make decisions that will promote a quality education for all students, regardless of their school district, zip code, race, or household income.
The Charleston County community.
I'm an ardent proponent of working in collaboration and would welcome any discussions with organizations that are striving to create better outcomes for students. I believe that if our community works together, we can create a world of equity and inclusion that will enhance learning, growth and economic opportunity for current and future generations.
It requires a true investment in our frontline team. As a school board member, I would support an incentive structure for administration, teachers, and staff to reduce attrition- increasing pay, providing more professional development opportunities (cultural competency, technology support, etc.) recruiting more administrators and teachers of color, and promoting a culture of support and teamwork, not negativity.
The school district has been inconsistent in addressing persistent racism and segregation in the schools. There are multiple layers that need to be considered and it starts by working together to understand the issues that are negatively impacting our communities. As a school board member, I would support an incentive structure for administration and teachers to reduce attrition, such as providing professional development opportunities in cultural competency, recruiting more administrators and teachers of color, and promoting a culture of excellence, not negativity. I would work with the constituent school board to understand our approach to discipline and promote restorative discipline practices and training. I would work with the school district to find innovative approaches to improving parental involvement and decision-making. I've seen firsthand in my work at Kids On Point that transparency and consistency creates an environment of trust and engagement.
