Liang-Fang Chao was an at-large member of the Cupertino Union School District Board of Education in California. Chao assumed office in 2016. Chao left office in 2019.

Chao has lived in Cupertino since 1998. She has worked as an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering for Iowa State University, as a researcher at Munich Technological University, and as a senior staff engineer for Quickturn Design Systems and Cadence Design Systems. Chao earned a master's degree in computer engineering from National Chiao Tung University and a Ph.D. in computer science from Princeton University. She and her husband have two sons, both of whom attend Cupertino schools.[1]

Chao has volunteered in the district as a math circle facilitator and math olympiad founder. She has also served as a volunteer mentor for the Maker Faire’s Young Maker program, as a board member of the YMCA, and as a storyteller and reading program volunteer at the San Jose Public Library. She also established Better Cupertino, a group that raises awareness about transparency and accountability.[2]

Two of the five seats on the Cupertino Union School District Board of Education were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. In their bids for re-election, incumbents Josephine Lucey and Phyllis Vogel ran against challengers Gregory Anderson and Liang-Fang Chao. Vogel won re-election to the board, and Chao won the other seat on the ballot.[3][4]

Chao reported $28,706.55 in contributions and $26,569.42 in expenditures to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters, which left her campaign with $2,137.13 on hand in the election.[5]

Endorsements

Chao was endorsed by the Cupertino Education Association, the community group BetterCupertino, California State Assembly member Kansen Chu (D-25), and Santa Clara County Board of Education member Joseph Di Salvo.[6][7] She was also endorsed by a number of community members, including fellow challenger Gregory Anderson.
