I am most passionate about social policy. This is my area of expertise as I hold a doctorate degree in social work and have practiced clinical social work for more than 30 years in service and administrative positions. I feel strongly that individuals and families thrive when they coexist with the community through contributing and interdependence at their level of their capability. This means that social policy exists to help people in need but it also means that the goal of social policy is to empower people to actively engage with the community in a meaningful way. I will work to create and modify social policy so that individual responsibility is the goal of benefits and services.

Social policy includes policy and funding to address our problem with affordable housing in the Flathead Valley. I am looking for innovative ways to support small businesses by promoting affordable housing for current and potential employees. This is important because we are experiencing a labor shortage. My focus is on the use of State and Federal dollars, and ideas include grants for small businesses to provide employee housing and more creative use of existing housing supplements so that working residents can be rewarded.

A good legislator insists on participating in The initiation of policy. This may be in relation to improving policy or to proposing new policy. It is critically important that an elected legislator actively serve its constituencies by responding to request for help and taking care of the districts interests through legislation.
Service to my family and community
I remember when Ronald Reagan was shot. I was in the school library and our librarian stopped everything we were doing and turned the news on the TV and explained the governmental processes and the impact that this would have on our nation.
Our Governor carries out his management and leadership responsibilities with the support and assistance of department and agency heads, many of whom they are empowered to appoint. The principal functions of the legislature are balancing power, representing constituencies and making laws. Although the legislature must be independent of the governor, it’s important to collaborate regarding the needs of constituents and the best interest of the long and short term goals of the state government. The ideal relationship between the governor and the state state legislature happens when the governor and legislature are rooted in similar political philosophies. This allows for progress regarding the direction, needs, and goals of the two branches of government.
It’s critically important to build relationships with other legislators for three main reasons. First, were able to engage in discourse about important issues. Second, were able to share ideas and perspectives, even those that we just disagree with. And third, it allows us to be fully engaged in the legislative process.
Compromise is necessary for policy making because policy makers are individuals with philosophical leanings that are rooted in their experience, values, and cultural beliefs. Because policy recommendations are rooted in such a strong dimension of a persons life, politicians would be constantly at odds and the legislature would be in gridlock without compromise.
