Campaign themes
2016
Clifton highlighted four issues facing the city of Baltimore prior to the primary election:[2]
Accountability
| “ |
Our government leaders should take responsibility for their actions. The citizens of Baltimore City deserve to know that their elected officials are working hard to ensure that the best interests of the people are being taken care of. When people feel that their needs are being ignored, especially by the people that they helped to put in office, they become distrustful. It's time to bring accountability back and to restore dignity and honesty.[3] |
” |
Justice
| “ |
In light of events that have not only occurred this year, but for decades, there have been many people who were and are on the receiving end of unfairness. Cries for relief and assistance have gone unheeded for a very, very long time. It's time to put an end to suffering and to truly listen to the ones who are asking for help. New leadership is needed...leadership that is ready, willing, and able to make a stand for justice.[3] |
” |
Progress
| “ |
Unfinished business in the City needs to be addressed. There has been some progress made, but we need more of it on a wider scale. Especially when a part of the population can barely make ends meet and find it difficult to take care of not only themselves, but their families as well. Not enough is being done. The people that live in blighted neighborhoods can attest to that. Costs of living, crime rates, and unemployment rates are a few of the things that have gone up.[3] |
” |
Transperancy
| “ |
Taxpayers deserve to know what their money is being used for. If you are being provided a service, you have the right to know how much it's going to cost you, and what is included with the services that you receive. No one should have to ask, "Where did the money go?" Or any other question that will cast doubt on the honesty and effectiveness of government officials and employees.[3] |
