Barela ran for election to the Deaf Smith County Court.
Primary: He was defeated in the Republican primary on March 4, 2014, receiving 13.2 percent of the vote. He competed against Romeo Ramirez, D.J. Wagner, Luis Zamora, Dennis Detten, Christopher Trusty and Ron Muller.
