Maria Ramirez was a candidate for the Texas Eighth District Court of Appeals in the 2016 elections.[1]

Ramirez announced her intention to challenge incumbent Justice Steven Hughes for his seat on the Texas Eighth District Court of Appeals in the 2016 elections. Like Hughes, Ramirez is a registered Democrat. Hughes and Ramirez faced off in a five-way primary election. No Republicans filed to run for Hughes' seat.[1] Ramirez and Gina Palafox were the top two finishers in the March 1 primary. Because neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, they faced each other in a May 24 runoff. Palafox won.
